Hello everyone!
My name is Mr. Van Horn, and I teach 5-12 Visual Arts and Digital Media at Concord Academy Petoskey.
I grew up in London, Ohio, and graduated from The Ohio State University with a bachelor's degree in Visual Arts Education. I finished my graduate year in 2009 and was licensed to teach in Ohio. I have since also been certified for K-12 Visual Arts (LQ) in Michigan. My wife, Megan, and dogs, Benny and Mosey, and I live at Walloon Lake.
Upon moving to Michigan I spent my first year as a paraprofessional and program activity leader in Boyne City Middle School. I spent the next year as a professional photographer, shooting photos and videos for publications across all of Michigan. Finally, I found a great job as a visual arts teacher at Concord Academy Petoskey in 2011, and have been here since.
At Concord, I am involved in several extra-curricular activities. I lead and direct our student/teacher band, "The Grapes," am an assistant coach for our middle school robotics team, "The Bot-o-CAPs," am the high school Quiz Bowl advisor, and last September, I organized a large-scale fundraiser called "heARTS for Houston," which engaged both student and professional artists and raised more than $8,000 for victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. In addition, I am responsible for Concord's middle and high school art at the annual Crooked Tree Youth Art Show, and I have been both a junior and senior class advisor, organizing class trips, prom and graduation. In 2015, I was honored to be selected by our seniors to provide the commencement address. Concord allows me to wear many hats and demonstrate my creativity in multiple areas!
